Year-round Selichot, following the rite of Bohemia, Poland, Moravia and Austria. Amsterdam: Hertz Levi Rofe and his son-in-law Kosman, [1751]. Fine decorated title frame.
Contents on last leaf.
On title page, signature of "Miryam Keyser" (another signature of hers on pp. 40a, 100a) and ownership inscription: "Here, London – belongs to the official Miriam wife of Ziskind Keyser, Shanah Tovah" (both in Hebrew).
Inscriptions deleted in ink on front endpaper (Hebrew): "This Selichot belongs to the distinguished woman Miriam wife of the official Ziskind Keyser, 1768"; "Belongs to R. Asher Goldsmid". This signature also appears on the front binding.
On back endpaper, stamp (Latin characters): "Mary Keyser, 1757" (the secular date is erased with ink, replaced by hand with the Hebrew year: "5527").
The present volume belonged to Mary Keyser of London, and was later passed down to her son-in-law Asher Goldsmid (1751-1822), who married her daughter Rachel Keyser (1752-1815) and signed his name on the present volume. The couple's son was Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (1778-1859), the first Jew in England to receive the hereditary title of baronet.
Mary and Ziskind Keyser were born in Amsterdam and immigrated to England. Mary was the daughter of Yissachar Ber Cohen-Kempen.
The Keyser and Goldsmid families were a mainstay of the early Ashkenazic community in Amsterdam, some of whom immigrated to London from ca. the 18th century (see Lot 40 in the present catalogue).
113, [1] leaves. 20.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Many stains (resulting from browning of paper). Dark ink stains to title page, slightly affecting text and title frame as a result of singeing. Early parchment binding, with defects (tears across spine).

Set of machzorim for high holidays. Part I: Seder Ashmurot, Selichot for Elul and ten days of repentance, "according to the rite of the Carpentras, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Cavaillon community"; Part II, Rosh Hashanah service, and Part III, Yom Kippur service, "according to the rite of the Avignon community", edited by R. Avraham Montel. Amsterdam: Hertz Levi Rofe and his son-in-law Kosman, 1763-1766. Three volumes.
In some copies of Seder HaAshmurot, including the present copy, the title page reads "according to the rite of the Carpentras, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Cavaillon community" instead of "according to the rite of the Avignon community"; apart from this, the two editions are entirely identical (on the differences between the selichot rites of Carpentras and Avignon, see: Zunz, Rites of Synagogue Liturgy, Breuer-Fraenkel Hebrew translation, Jerusalem, 2016, pp. 137-138, 291-294).
The Carpentras prayer and piyyut rites are unique to the southeastern French community. Its text was copied in manuscript machzorim for community members until the local scribes were unable to meet the demand. At that point a young local Torah scholar named R. Avraham son of Shmuel de Monteux (Montel) began to print the unique Carpentras prayer rite.
On the background to the publication and the work of the publisher Avraham son of Shmuel de Monteux (here called Montel), see: Sh. Schwartzfuchs, Documents on the Printing of "Mahzor Karpentrats", Alei Sefer, VI-VII, 1979, pp. 145-147 (Hebrew).
Lengthy handwritten inscriptions on front endpapers and inside the boards of first volume. The front endpapers and boards contain another sermon for Yom Kippur eve. The writer mentions his own manuscript books Ir David and Sefer HaMefoar.
Signature on title page of second volume for Rosh Hashanah: "Shlomo Dalpuget".
Three volumes. Volume I (Selichot): 82 leaves. Volume II (Rosh Hashanah): 60, 65-68 leaves. Volume III (Yom Kippur): 88 leaves. Lacking last leaf. 24-24.5 cm. Varying condition of volumes; first volume in good-fair condition, second and third volumes in fair to fair-good condition. Stains, including large dampstains to second volume, and especially dark stains to first and last leaves of third volume. Wear. Marginal tears and open tears to several leaves, repaired with paper in several places. Volumes I-II in early leather bindings (non-uniform), volume III in binding with leather spine. Wear and defects to bindings (open tears to spine of second volume).

Passover Haggadah, "with a beautiful commentary and fine illustrations of the signs and wonders G-d did for our ancestors", with commentary of R. Yitzchak Abarbanel and a map of Eretz Israel. Amsterdam: Asher Anshel son of Eliezer Chazan and Yissachar Ber son of Avraham Eliezer, 1695. Two title pages, the first one illustrated with copper engravings.
This Haggadah, illustrated by the artist Avraham HaGer (a German priest from Rhineland who converted to Judaism in Amsterdam), was the first Haggadah to be illustrated with copper engravings, and one of the first Hebrew books to be illustrated with this printing method, which, as the second title page asserts, is infinitely superior to previously used woodcuts. This edition served as a prototype for many subsequent Haggadot, either by inclusion of the map or by imitation of its illustrations (for more information on this Haggadah, see article by Cecil Roth, HaHaggadah HaMetzuyeret ShebiDefus, Areshet, III, 1961, pp. 22-25).
Ownership inscription (trimmed) at top of title page.
Stamp on title page and last leaf of the old Altona-Hamburg Beit Midrash.
[1], 26 leaves + [1] folding leaf. 29.5 cm. Fair condition. Many stains, including dampstains and dark food and wine stains (especially harsh stains to several leaves, covering entire page). Tears and open tears to title page and several other leaves, slightly affecting illustrated title frame and text, repaired with paper filling. Worming, slightly affecting text. New binding. Map in fair-good condition. Stains. Tears and marginal open tears to map, slightly affecting illustrations, repaired with paper filling. New binding.
Variant. The first title page was printed in two forms. The bottom half of the title page is the same in both, depicting Moses and Aaron. The upper part of the title pages differs. The more common version has six miniature circles with various Biblical scenes. The present variant has a large illustration of Moses kneeling next to the Burning Bush (a title page of this type later appeared in the Amsterdam 1712 edition). Besides this, there are minor differences in the text on the title page.
