Toldot Adam, Part II of Responsa of the Rashba, with Responsa of R. Molin HaLevi – the Maharil. Livorno: Yedidiah son of Yitzchak Gabbai, author of Kaf Nachat, [1657]. First edition.
The book comprises 405 responsa by the Rashba, known as Part II of Responsa of the Rashba. This part was not available to leading poskim such as the Beit Yosef, the Sma, the Shach and the Taz. The Knesset HaGedolah does not mention this part in Mahadura Kama of his book, and begins referring to it only in Mahadura Batra.
Inscription on several leaves at beginning: "From the Zera Moshe yeshiva – Yad Ramah…".
8; 104 leaves. 28.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains, including large, dark dampstains to first leaves. Worming, affecting text, partially repaired with paper. Tears and open tears to title page and several other leaves, repaired with paper. Inscriptions (deleted). New binding.
One of the first books printed in Livorno.
The first Hebrew press in Livorno was founded in 1650 by Yedidiah Gabbai, son of R. Yitzchak Gabbai, author of the Kaf Nachat commentary on the Mishnah. It was active for only nine years, and Hebrew printing in Livorno was resumed only 82 years later. Yedidiah Gabbai's son Avraham immigrated to Izmir, where he established its first printing press; the Gabbai family press later moved to Salonika.
The end of this book, like others printed by the family, features three crowns (resembling the printer's device of Bragadin in Venice), with a caption playing on the Gabbai family name: "There are three crowns, and the crown of a good reputation is superior to them (Gabeihem)".

Responsa Divrei Yosef, by kabbalist R. Yosef Ergas, author of Shomer Emunim. Livorno: Avraham Meldola, [1742].
R. Yosef Ergas (1685-1730) was a notable Italian kabbalist, author of Shomer Emunim, disciple of kabbalist R. Binyamin HaKohen, the Rabach. He was a rabbi in Pisa, where he established the Neveh Shalom yeshiva before he was appointed rabbi in Livorno (his hometown). R. Malachi HaKohen, author of Yad Malachi was among his leading disciples.
His renowned Shomer Emunim (first printed in Amsterdam 1736) became a basic text of kabbalah. He also authored other works. In his struggle against the Sabbatean Nechemiah Hayyun, he wrote the polemic composition Tochachat Megulah VehaTzad Nachash. R. Ergas' work is conventionally known as Shomer Emunim HaKadmon to differentiate it from a later work by Rebbe Aharon Roth.

Traduccion de la Oracion del Ajuno de los Temblores de Tierra [Translation of the prayer of the fast day for the earthquake]. Pisa: Evangelista Pugli, [1746]. Spanish and Ladino (with some Portuguese).
Spanish translation of the fast day prayer order Shivchei Todah (Livorno, 1744), originally authored in Hebrew by R. Malachi son of Yaakov HaKohen, a leading Italian rabbi, author of Yad Malachi.
Printed after a series of violent earthquakes that shook Livorno in 1742, upon which the rabbis of the city established 22nd Shevat as a fast day and day of permanent prayer and thanksgiving.
To make the book accessible to the Spanish-Portuguese Marrano community, the book was translated and commented by Dr. Abraham de Bargas, physician of the Jewish community in Livorno and a member of a Spanish Marrano family (De Bargas, who personally experienced the earthquake, had already authored a report on the events in 1742, Fiel relación de los terremotos).
At the beginning of the book is an introduction of the translator addressed to community leadership (the Mahamad), followed by an official authorization to print the book, signed by community leaders and rabbis.
Followed by six sonnets authored by rabbis and distinguished members of the community in honor of the event, headed by a sonnet of R. Refael Meldola, Rabbi of Livorno and Pisa, author of Responsa Mayim Rabim.
6, [1], 7-171, [2] pages. Approx. 15 cm. Fair-good condition. Stains and wear. Marginal worming to all leaves of book (slightly affecting text of a few of last leaves). Old binding, with rubbing and wear.
One of the few Spanish publications printed in Pisa in the 18th century for the Spanish-Portuguese community.

Toldot Shimshon, commentary on Tractate Avot by kabbalist R. Shimshon Chaim Nachmani, author of Zera Shimshon. Livorno: Moshe Athias, 1766. First edition.
Some words and decorations on title page and second leaf printed in red ink.
Segulah book for longevity and sustenance.
The book's name, Toldot Shimshon or "offspring of Shimshon", reflects the author's view of the book as his only progeny, after the death of his only son. In his introduction, he blesses whoever studies his book with longevity and sustenance: "Since due to my many sins, in the month of Av my beloved eldest and only son passed away, and I have not since merited to bear lasting offspring… and this will be my name and remembrance… Toldot Shimshon… I have printed so that my brothers, friends and students carry my name on their lips and my name will be remembered for good… with ten expressions of prayer I implore them, and may He Who recompenses repay them in the best way, with long life and abundant livelihood to those who do kindness…".
Twelve years later, he published his book Zera Shimshon, which as its name suggests was also intended to serve as his progeny. In the preface of Zera Shimshon, he once again asks that his book be studied in his merit, promising "He Who recompenses will repay you… with the threefold blessing of offspring, life and abundant livelihood", adding: "And your eyes will witness sons and grandsons like olive shoots around your table, wise and intelligent, and houses full of goodness, neither wealth nor honor will cease from your descendants…".
In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the Zera Shimshon, and many accounts have been publicized of couples who were blessed with children in the merit of studying his book. These stories were recorded in the Niflaot Shimshon leaflets and later in Kovetz Sipurei Yeshuot printed at the end of the new edition of the book (published by the Association for Spreading the Teachings of the Zera Shimshon, Arad 2015).
The author, R. Shimshon Chaim son of R. Nachman Michael Nachmani (1706-1779), was an Italian kabbalist and Torah scholar. He was a disciple of R. David Finzi (father-in-law of the Ramchal) and R. Aviad Sar Shalom Basilea, author of Emunat Chachamim. He disseminated Torah in Modena and Mantua and edified disciples who later held rabbinic positions in several Italian communities. The Chida wrote that he was proficient in practical Kabbalah and had ordered his kabbalistic writings to be buried in his grave (Shem HaGedolim, Maarechet Sefarim, 46). The present work also includes kabbalistic commentaries and homilies, including references to manuscript texts of R. Chaim Vital in several places.
On back endpapers, interesting draft letter (in three copies written on consecutive dates in Shevat 1852), in Hebrew and Yiddish, by "Nisan Mendel son of R. Moshe HaKohen", who writes from Jerusalem to his father regarding his business affairs.
Enclosed is a separate copy of the first two leaves (including the second leaf in Italian). Signatures on enclosed copy's title page: "Yaakov Yaavetz", and other inscriptions.
R. Yaakov Yaavetz (ca. 1797-1875), a Torah scholar of Izmir, immigrated to Jerusalem late in life and passed away there. Author of Tzur Yaakov (Izmir, 1866), with an approbation by R. Chaim Palachi.
[3], 120 leaves. Lacking [3] index leaves at end (with photocopy replacements). 19.5 cm. Partially dark paper. Overall fair condition. Stains, including dampstains. Wear. Tears and open tears, mainly to first leaves, affecting text and title frame, partially repaired with paper. Worming, affecting text, with much worming to enclosed copy of first two leaves.
