Hanukkah lamp for the synagogue. Venice, first half of 18th century.
Silver, repoussé and engraved (several hallmarks of Venice [the lion of St. Mark] and assayer's marks of Zuanne Premuda, active 1712-1749, the letters "ZP" around a bird);
wood; iron sheet.
wood; iron sheet.
Rare and large Venetian Hanukkah lamp, in baroque style, meant to be hung in the synagogue. Made of a large silver sheet, with repoussé vegetal patterns, rocailles and acanthus leaves in characteristic baroque design. The shamash and eight fonts are affixed to the edges of hooked suspenders and stylized as small bowls with pinched spouts. The back side is affixed to a thick contemporary wooden board, meant to be hung on a wall, with an iron suspender at top.
Silver Hanukkah lamps from 18th-century Italy are especially rare, as most lamps from the period were produced from brass or bronze and meant for home usage. Most known silver Hanukkah lamps of 18th-century Italy were produced in Rome, with a design somewhat different from that of the present lamp, and most are held in museum collections, with only a few lamps privately owned.
The present lamp is therefore unique in a number of ways: firstly in its exceptional and unusual design and dimensions, secondly as it was intended for synagogue use (as opposed to home), thirdly in its Venetian provenance (as opposed to Rome), and fourthly in its relatively early dating.
This lamp's decorations are reminiscent of the style of decorations featured on Hebrew books printed in Venice in the 18th century, some of which were presumably produced in the same workshop as the present lamp. A similar style of repoussé decorations appears in other contemporary silver Judaica objects, such as Torah decorations and spiceboxes.
Accordingly, the silver assayer Zuanne Premuda's mark appears on several contemporary Judaica objects, including: Jewish silver bindings

Another lamp, with design reminiscent of the present lamp, is the Hanukkah lamp of the Matir Asurim society of Florence (Florence Jewish community collection), exhibited at the Gardens and Ghettos exhibition in the Jewish Museum in New York (see exhibition catalog, 1989, no. 191).
Height: 40.5 cm, width: 48.5 cm, depth: approx. 11.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Minor fractures, warping and old soldering repairs to silver, mainly to edges of lamp and its decorations. Some punctures on back side, indicating lacking nails. Warping and soldering repair to oil font suspenders. Rust to back side of screw nuts. Piece lacking and rift on wooden base. Remnants of paint and plaster on wooden base. The lamp is accompanied by a large round, painted iron drip pan (possibly somewhat later), which had been affixed to bottom of outer back side, with screws and nuts of oil font hangers. Rust, warping and fractures to drip pan.

Hanukkah lamp. Vienna, [late 19th or early 20th century].
Silver, cast, repoussé, and stamped (marked with Austro-Hungarian fineness marks in use from 1886; and with maker’s mark: "HS" = Hermann Südfeld).
Back plate adorned with vegetal patterns. Architectonic design, with the Two Tablets of the Law (plain, uninscribed) at center, enclosed within a frame of sharp-pointed rays of light. Back plate surmounted by crown. Row of oil fonts (removable) positioned in front.
The Jewish silversmith Hermann Südfeld (1835-1915), active in Vienna in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, created household silver objects (candlesticks, boxes), some in Art Nouveau style. In addition he produced Jewish sacred objects, including Torah ornaments (collections of the Jewish Museum, Prague, and the Bar-David Museum, Kibbutz Bar’am); Hanukkah lamps (with several examples in the Jewish Museum, New York); and a Havdalah spicebox (The Israel Museum Collection).
Height: 25 cm. Width: 22 cm. Depth: 6.5 cm. Weight: 500 g. Overall good condition. Minor warping and fractures. Old soldering repairs. Ornament missing from top of back plate (above crown). Missing servant light. Spouts missing from three oil fonts.

Erect Hanukkah lamp. Warsaw, Poland, 1908-26.
Silver, cast, lathed, and stamped (marked with fineness mark "84" from Warsaw, in use 1908-26; and with maker’s mark: "P.Ł" = Piotr Łątkowski; and with mark of silversmith or retailer, "M. H. Spiro"; and additional mark: "PATENT No 5820" in Cyrillic script).
Tall, erect Hanukkah lamp with central shaft adorned with patterns of parallel lines, leaves, and flowers. Branches shaped like tendrils with leaves and grape clusters. Toward the top of the central shaft and behind the removable servant light candle socket / oil font is a spherical ornament, surmounted by the Two Tablets of the Law (plain, uninscribed) framed by a leafy wreath, which are in turn surmounted by a pair of lions. Additional hook for (missing) pitcher.
The existence of two distinct marks suggests a cooperative effort, either between two different silversmiths, or alternatively between a single silversmith (Łątkowski) and a retailer (Spiro).
Height: 62 cm. Base: 15X15 cm. Maximal width: 36 cm. Weight: 1200 g. Overall good condition. Warping, old soldering repairs, and some corrosion. Removable pitcher (for oil) missing.

Erect Hanukkah lamp. Krakow, Poland, 1920-1931.
Silver, cast, lathed, and engraved (marked with Polish fineness mark from Krakow, in use 1920-31; bottom part marked with maker’s mark: "SH" or "HS", possibly representing S. Herzog; and upper parts marked with maker’s mark: "BG").
Tall, erect Hanukkah lamp with square base engraved with vegetal patterns. Central shaft surmounted by openwork Star of David.
The existence of two distinct makers’ marks apparently indicates that the base and the upper parts were not originally created together. Nevertheless, the lamp’s design is harmonious, and corresponds well with other objects bearing the "SH" maker’s mark. This lamp therefore likely represents either a cooperative effort between two silversmiths (see also previous lot), or alternatively between a single silversmith and a retailer of silver items. For a similar Hanukkah lamp bearing the "SH" (or "HS") maker’s mark, see: Auction, Sotheby’s, Tel Aviv, September 29, 1994, Lot No. 164; see also: The Center for Jewish Art (CJA), Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Item Nos. 17911 and 2035.
Height: 72.5 cm. Width of base: 18X18 cm. Maximal width: 36 cm. Weight: 1460 g. Overall good condition. Servant light missing. Loose screw joints and minor warping. One candle socket with loose screw joint; socket consequently out of line with remaining candle sockets.
