Sefat Emet, printed leaf (printed on both sides) with letter of R. Avraham Ashkenazi, the Rishon LeTzion, and letters of Jerusalem rabbis, opposing the newspaper HaChavatzelet for degrading the rabbis of the Perushim kollels, R. Shmuel Salant and R. Meir Auerbach. Jerusalem: [Yoel Moshe Salomon], Kislev 1873.
Printed letter of R. Avraham Ashkenazi addressed to R. Yaakov HaLevi Sapir (author of Even Sapir). The leaf continues with letters signed (in print) by tens of rabbis who immigrated to Jerusalem, a letter of R. David son of Shimon head of the Maghrebi community in Jerusalem, and a letter signed (in printed) by fifteen important notables of Jerusalem.
The present poster was published during the controversy between Yisrael Dov Frumkin, editor of HaChavatzelet, on one side, and R. Shmuel Salant and R. Meir Auerbach on the other (following a dispute over the courtyard of the Hurva synagogue and the Etz Chaim yeshiva).
Yisrael Dov Frumkin, editor of HaChavatzelet and a member of the Chassidic community in Jerusalem, was part of the opposition to the Perushim kollel Knesset Yisrael, which had established a separate organization Tiferet Yerushalayim, which was joined by the Rabbi of Radishkovitz, formerly an administrator of the Perushim kollel. Frumkin's opposition to the Perushim rabbis of Jerusalem, published in his newspaper and other forums, attacking the Halukka and community administration, led the rabbis of Jerusalem to fight back and ban his newspaper.
See Lot Nos. 167 and 169.
[1] leaf, 32.5 cm. Printed on both sides. Fair condition. Wear and folding marks. Dark stains and small open tears.
Especially rare. Sh. Halevy, no. 217, likewise describes the present poster as especially rare.
