At beginning of book, two handwritten leaves with a warm, lengthy dedication in English to the Reform rabbi Morris Lazaron, during his visit to Panama, by the Castro family, his relatives from his mother's side. The dedication is signed by Abraham A. Sasso and Judith de Castro, Panama, 1938. Enclosed is a photograph, evidently depicting the rabbi and his family, signed on verso "Panama – Aug 1938".
Morris Samuel Lazaron (1888-1979) was an American Reform rabbi and anti-Zionist activist. His mother was from the Castro family, a family with deep Spanish-Portuguese roots. In 1914 he was ordained by the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and in 1915 he was appointed rabbi of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, one of the most distinguished and important Reform communities in the United States, which he led for some three decades.
Although he was originally sympathetic to Zionism, the rise of nationalism in Europe in the 1930s (and a visit in Nazi Germany) dramatically changed his views, and he became a leader of the anti-Zionist movement in the United States. He was a founder of the American Council for Judaism. In his later years, he lived in London, where he passed away.
