Two Sephardic-rite machzorim, for high holidays and the three festivals, from two different editions printed in Venice and Pisa in the 18th century, housed in magnificent leather slipcases:
• Sephardic-rite three festival machzor, with additions from Chemdat Yamim and other additions following the Constantinople and Izmir rite. Venice: sons of Foa, 1774.
With many halachot in Ladino.
259, [4] leaves (misfoliation; last leaf numbered 268). 16.5 cm. Gilt edges. Fair condition. Severe browning of paper of many leaves. Stains, including especially dark stains. Marginal tears to several leaves.
• Sephardic-rite high holiday machzor, with additions from Chemdat Yamim and other additions following the Constantinople and Izmir rite. Pisa: Samuel Foa, 1781.
32, 25-351, [1] leaves. 16.5 cm. Gilt edges. Browning of paper of most leaves. Fair-good condition. Stains, including especially dark stains to some leaves. Marginal tears to several leaves.
Both machzorim were evidently bound in elaborate silver bindings, but these were removed, leaving behind the wooden boards of the binding only (with original color endpaper). Both bindings are housed in elaborate leather-coated cardboard slipcases (uniform), with gilt decorations of rich vegetal patterns, and an elaborate coat of arms on both sides of each slipcase, with a center cartouche featuring a lion waving its front paws towards a small tree.
One case has the coat of arms surrounded on its three sides with the letters "A.A.R.", while the other has the letters "S.A.R."; the spines of the volumes are inscribed with the contents of the volume ("Rosh Hashanah, Kippur"; "Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot"), and again the inscription "S.A.R.".
