Letter (2 leaves) of R. Menachem Mendel Schneerson, chairman of the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch (later the Lubavitcher Rebbe), with his signature in English: "M. Schneerson". Brooklyn, New York, March 4 [19th Adar] 1945. English.
Typewritten on the official stationery of the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch (the educational organ of Chabad in the United States, administered by the Rebbe from its founding in 1941).
This letter was written while the Rebbe was chairman of the Executive Committee of Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch, some five years before his accession to the leadership of Chabad. It was addressed to one of the leading philanthropists and supporters of Chabad institutions in its formative years in the United States."
The Rebbe thanks him for his generous donation, which arrived at the perfect time, on Erev Purim. The Rebbe explains the meaning of Purim and its special mitzvot: Mishloach Manot, portions of food, and Matanot LaEvyonim, gifts to the poor.
The Rebbe explains that there are two kinds of material assistance: gifts to the poor for the needy, and portions of food for those who have no lack of food, but simply have no food prepared, to enable them to enjoy the holiday without the need to first purchase and prepare their food.
This indicates to the Rebbe that the same applies to spiritual assistance: there are the spiritually poor, who lack knowledge; and the spiritually rich, who are gifted with intellectual skills, but whose spiritual wealth is left unrealized. The Rebbe explains that assistance must be given not only to the spiritually poor but also to the rich, to whom it is a great mitzvah to give a gift of ready-made spiritual assistance.
The Rebbe concludes by thanking him for his gift to the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch for his assistance in providing spiritual food for Jewish youth. He relates to administrative aspects of the organization and an audit that was delayed because of the tax season.
The Rebbe concludes with his regards, signing his name as "Rabbi Mendel Schneerson, Chairman, Executive Committee" (English).

Letter (2 leaves) of Rebbe Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, the Rebbe Rayatz of Lubavitch. Brooklyn, New York, 28th Adar 1945. Yiddish.
Typewritten on the Rebbe Rayatz's official stationery, with his signature: "Yosef Yitzchak", with underlining and emphasis in pen under some lines and sentences.
It was addressed to a leading philanthropist and supporter of Chabad institutions in their formative years in the United States.
In this exceptionally personal and revealing letter, the Rebbe Rayatz asks him to be his partner in the great mission of his soul – disseminating Torah and Judaism. He describes his work and his devotion to it over a period of nearly fifty years, despite his faltering health: "Your soul's role is to go along with me, step by step, in my soul's great mission. You should know, my dear friend, that I worked for 25 years, thank G-d, to disseminate Torah and Judaism and to do communal work together with my father, and for 25 more years – that is, if G-d wills it, on the coming 12th of Tamuz I will have been occupied with this service for 50 years – I have been working with the power of my father and my holy ancestors. My willful, self-effacing work has broken my body, but that is not what I am writing you about, I'm writing about how I am assigned such a great, obligatory work, the work of spreading Torah and Judaism and working for the Jewish people, that I cannot take my weak and faltering physical health condition into account. I must consider, and do consider, the healthy and strong condition of my soul. My soul's mission must – with G-d's help – materialize, in accordance with G-d's will and the will of my father and my holy ancestors, irrespective of anything else".
As R. Schneerson [later the Lubavitcher Rebbe] had relayed that the philanthropist had expressed a desire to take part in and provide for the Rebbe's work, the Rebbe proposes an uncommon partnership: the recipient and his partner should establish a business whose profits would be dedicated to spreading Torah and Judaism in the United States and Eretz Israel.
The Rebbe goes on to thank him for his donation to the yeshiva, blessing him with success. He concludes with a blessing to him and his family, for happiness with his wife, to educate his children to be good, committed Jews, and to derive satisfaction from them.
2 leaves, official stationery. 28 cm. Good condition. Folding marks. Inscriptions at edge of leaf 1 (date and name of recipient in English).
This letter is printed in the Igrot Kodesh of the Rebbe Rayatz, VIII, p. 574 (letter 2664).

Typewritten on the Rebbe Rayatz's official stationery, with his signature: "Yosef Yitzchak", with lines and emphasis in pen under some lines and sentences.
Addressed to a leading supporter of Chabad institutions in their formative years in the United States.
In this letter, written a few weeks after the end of World War II, the Rebbe Rayatz encourages Stulman to promote his vision of world peace through the international contacts of Jacob Landau, founder of the Jewish Telegraph Agency (JTA). The Rebbe thanks him for his presence and speech at a conference planned to take place on 3rd Tamuz (June 14), and for his financial support of the agency, stressing that now, after the Holocaust, is the time to look after the condition of Jews worldwide.
He concludes with blessings to him, his wife and their children.
An interesting note at the bottom of leaf 1 (in English) clarifies that the Yiddish expression for a "few words" (circled in the text in red ink) may also relate to a lengthy speech.

Letter of Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Brooklyn, New York, 7th Adar 1956. English.
Typewritten on the Rebbe's official stationery, with the Rebbe's English signature: "M. Schneerson". One word added by hand (in Hebrew).
The letter was addressed to the president of Young Israel of Long Beach, New York, for an upcoming foundation stone laying ceremony of a new building meant to serve as synagogue and mikveh, written in view of the opposition that the mikveh engendered among some members of the congregation.
The letter begins with the Rebbe's blessing for the foundation laying ceremony, asking to convey his wishes and prayers for success.
The Rebbe goes on to explain that a kosher synagogue means observance of halachah inside and outside of the synagogue, in every particularity.
The main part of the letter is dedicated to describing the great importance of the mikveh. The Rebbe explains that mystery of conception and birth are beyond human understanding, and the halachot associated with them are not to be explained with human logic.
The Rebbe goes on to stress the vital importance of family purity laws for the coming generations. If Jewish parents, willing to do everything for their children's welfare, only knew how important the mikveh and its associated laws influence their own welfare and that of their children and descendants, both spiritually and physically, they would certainly treat these laws with the utmost seriousness.
The Rebbe concludes his letter with a blessing to Young Israel of Long Beach to serve as an inspiration for the community, to preserve the generation and coming generations in health, physically and spiritually.

Letter of Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Brooklyn, New York, 12th Kislev 1960.
Typewritten on the Rebbe's official stationery, with his signature: "M.Schneerson", with words added by hand.
Addressed to the shochet R. Avraham Alexander Seder Nemtzov (1871-1962), a leading Chabad Chassid, author of Edut LeAsaf on the Gemara, Midrash and Torah portions – in response to a commentary on Chayei Sarah that the Rebbe had sent. The Rebbe blesses him to study the Torah with its explanation, and for all the matters alluded to in this Torah portion reveal the divine wisdom, which is the very meaning of the Hanukkah miracle, as olive oil is an allusion to wisdom.
At the end of the letter, after the words "With a blessing to increase strength in Torah and mitzvot, over good days and years", the Rebbe adds by hand: "in health and happiness".
At the edge of the letter, "out of affection for the matter", the Rebbe offers three more points and references to his explanation.
[1] leaf, official stationery. Approx. 28 cm. Good condition. Folding marks. Light stains and creases. Small paper sticker to verso.

Public-private letter of Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Brooklyn, New York, 14th Tevet 1961.
Typewritten on official stationery of the Rebbe, with his signature: "M.Schneerson", with a word added by hand.
Public-private letter (an identical letter sent to several individuals), addressed to the shochet R. Avraham Alexander Sender Nemtzov (1871-1962), an important Chabad Chassid, author of Edut LeAsaf.
In this letter, the Rebbe recounts a story about the Tzemach Tzedek's childhood, when he asked his grandfather, the Alter Rebbe, how Jacob could spend 17 of his years in the defiled land of Egypt. His grandfather responded that Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to establish a house of study – where there is Torah study, there is closeness to G-d, which enables one to live a true life even in Egypt.
Based on this explanation, the Rebbe prays that each one of us in our own "Egypt" may nevertheless live a true life, by studying Torah and Chassidut.
At the end of the letter, the Rebbe adds by hand the words: "With respect and [with blessing]".
The foot of the letter contains references and sources to topics and ideas cited in the letter.
[1] leaf, official stationery. Thin paper. 27.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Folding marks. Marginal tears and open tears (not affecting text). Paper sticker on verso.
This letter is printed in the Rebbe's Igrot Kodesh, XX, p. 109 (letter 7540), and Likutei Sichot, X, p. 320 (also cited in Hayom Yom, 18th Tevet).

Letter handwritten and signed by Rebbe Moshe Eichenstein of Zidichov-Veretzky, Rabbi of Zidichov. Munkacs, [ca. summer 1941].
Addressed to Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik HaLevi Hertzog, probably during summer 1941, while the Hungarian authorities began expelling Jews who were not Hungarian citizens. The elderly Rebbe and his family, who originated in Zidichov, Galicia, were viewed by the authorities as foreign nationals and were therefore confronted with immediate expulsion. In his letter, the Rebbe describes the difficult situation and danger they were faced with, begging R. Hertzog to do all in his power to attain immigration visas for him and his family, as the British consulate in Budapest rejected their request for visas to Eretz Israel. He states that their faith is only in G-d and asks R. Hertzog to be the one to perform the mitzvah of saving them.
The Rebbe concludes with a prayer and blessing for R. Hertzog, and expresses his wish to meet with him in person in Jerusalem, followed by his signature.
Rebbe Moshe Eichenstein of Zidichov-Veretzky (1874-1944; perished in the Holocaust). In 1892 he was appointed Rabbi of Zidichov (Zhydachiv) and later succeeded his father as Rebbe of Zidichov and later Veretzky (Nyzhni Vorota). In 1924 he succeeded his father in his Beit Midrash at Munkacs. He was known as a leading rebbe, a master of hidden and revealed realms of the Torah and a wonder-worker.
R. Yitzchak Yaakov Weiss, author of Minchat Yitzchak (1902-1989) was a close disciple of Rebbe Moshe Eichenstein. Growing up in Munkacs, he regularly prayed at the local Zidichov Beit Midrash and studied together with Rebbe Moshe's son R. Sender Lipa. In his Responsa (Minchat Yitzchak 3:91), he cites Rebbe Moshe Eichenstein as a formative influence on him in his youth.
